Prielom Hornádu: The River Crossing

Slovenský Raj Group Picture
Slovenský raj — February 2026

Our second mission took a squad of ten from Košice to Spišská Nová Ves. After a brief detour through a local village, we hit the blue trail before switching to the green path for better views of the Hornád River.

The highlight was the ferrata at Prielom Hornádu, followed by a steep climb that we handled with ease. We caught some incredible views at Tomášovský výhľad and even took a "geological break" at an abandoned rock-splitting mine to throw some stones.

Despite a distinct lack of trail toilets, the journey was a success. We wrapped up the day with a smooth walk to Spišské Tomášovce for the train ride home.

Veľký Choč: The First Ascent

Veľký Choč (1,611 m) — 24 January 2026

Our club's debut journey began at 7:00 AM from Košice. After a smooth train ride to Ružomberok and a bus to Valaská Dubová, we hit the blue trail. A local woman kindly steered us back on track after a small wrong turn!

The climb to Lúka pod Chočom was steady, but the final red trail section was brutal. The summit greeted us with thick fog, freezing winds, and zero visibility. Despite the conditions, meeting a friendly Czech group at the top kept our spirits high.

The slippery descent was a bit of a challenge, getting us back to Ružomberok earlier than planned, but it was a valuable first experience for everyone (including our four-legged hiker!).
